{Mini Review} Spies and Prejudice - Talia Vance

Spies and Prejudice by Talia Vance
Genre: YA Contemporary
Release Date: Jun 11 / 2013
Publisher: Egmont USA
Fields’ Rule #1: Don’t fall for the enemy.
Berry Fields is not looking for a boyfriend. She’s busy trailing cheaters and liars in her job as a private investigator, collecting evidence of the affairs she’s sure all men commit. And thanks to a pepper spray incident during an eighth grade game of spin the bottle, the guys at her school are not exactly lining up to date her, either.
So when arrogant—and gorgeous—Tanner Halston rolls into town and calls her “nothing amazing,” it’s no loss for Berry. She’ll forget him in no time. She’s more concerned with the questions surfacing about her mother’s death.
But why does Tanner seem to pop up everywhere in her investigation, always getting in her way? Is he trying to stop her from discovering the truth, or protecting her from an unknown threat? And why can’t Berry remember to hate him when he looks into her eyes?
With a playful nod to Jane Austen, Spies and Prejudice will captivate readers as love and espionage collide.

Thank you so much to Egmont and Netgalley for the review copy!

Spies and Prejudice was a bit of a disappointment. It's a retelling of Pride and Prejudice and Lizzy is now Berry and Mr. Darcy is now Tanner. I liked Berry and Tanner's arguments and seeing Berry's growth. She learned something about herself in the end and that was good. There was an unanswered question though: Who was Drew really working for? I wish that question got answered. I also didn't like how Berry was too trusting of people. Spies and Prejudice is a good story to pass time with but otherwise, it was okay.

  1. I loved Pride and Prejudice, Lizzy & Mr. Darcy arguments were what made the story and their relationship so special for me. So it's good that the author kept that aspect with Berry & Tanner, but it's sad that overall the book didn't leave a stronger impression on you. I think it would be a fun read and I'd like to give it a try sometime. Thanks for the mini review :)

    1. I thought Lizzy and Mr. Darcy were waaaay better than Berry and Tanner. They just don't have the same spark, y'know? I haven't found any retellings worth reading yet :(

  2. I agree with Aman, the original is and probably always will be the best. I tried reading a modern retelling and it was awful. I'm still looking for a good retelling of the classic. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I have yet to read Pride and Prejudice! And hearing so much praise, I have also heard a fair share of pros and cons about the retellings. I love how the sounds of Spies and Prejudice is! Spies are my kind of books. ;D Guess it was one of those 'meh' books?

To answer your question...Graduation was tiring and we had to do this choral reading as a "surprise" for our audience (i.e. parents). But when it was all over (pretty quickly) I just felt like everything was coming to an end way to fast. Thanks for asking, though!

  5. The cover reminds me of the TV series Revenge- maybe the model looks like the actress... I don't even wathc that programme!
I'm sorry you didn't like this too much, but I am glad it wasn't a total disappointment! It would be a hard book to modernize, I would think.
